Acting Like a Disney Princesses: A Cheapskate Princess Guide

how to act like a Disney Princess

Updated for 2017!

A funny thing about growing up with Disney movies, or watching these movies with your kids, is that you get a glimpse into the life of a fairy tale princess. As children, we dream and daydream of living in castles and marrying our own prince, but of course, the reality is, we are just mere mortals, occasionally visiting Cinderella Castle for a short-lived glimpse of the regal life. And while there have been some negative criticism on female characters waiting for a Prince Charming to rescue them, there are certainly positive princess traits girls and ladies of all ages can adopt as their own.

The Disney Princess are a Walt Disney Company franchise based on fictional characters currently numbering eleven ladies in total.  The members of the franchise are Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel and Merida.

My usual focus, as (self-proclaimed) Disney’s Cheapskate Princess, is trying to cheapskate your way to a Disney vacation. But half of being a Cheapskate Princess is being just that…a princess. Ever dreamed of being a princess? Here are 10 surefire ways to act like a Disney Princess yourself.

1. Speak up and be willing to fight for what you want.

Princesses like Ariel and Jasmine are known to be to be straightforward. Once she leaves her tower and overcomes her initial anxiety, Rapunzel is not afraid to stand up for herself when she needs to. Cinderella was incredibly honest and faithful, always standing for what she thought was right.

Stand up for what you believe in, don’t be afraid to say what you are feeling inside.  Snow White, always polite, voiced her opinion. There are ways to talk to people where you speak up for yourself that don’t push them away.  And smile when you speak, because you look more confident and likable when you speak up for yourself through a pretty smile.

2. Be graceful.

Look at those Disney Princesses and the way they carry themselves. Belle is graceful, twirling in her ball gown. Pocahontas is noble, but she is also known as athletic, skillful, and strong, all of which can be defined as traits of grace. Aurora is very sophisticated and exhibits a refined air about her, as does Cinderella. We can’t all walk around singing and looking stunning in ball gowns. We can throw our shoulders back, tilt our chin up, and walk in confidence and grace to meet the world.

The Disney Princesses are all just gorgeous, yet because they are very humble and modest, they would never tell you how attractive they are. When people tell you that you are pretty, accept those comments without self-deprecating humor.  Above all, don’t be vain and shallow, the opposites of true grace, and try not to be stingy with your own compliments toward friends and family.  If you love someone’s hairstyle or their outfit, let them know.  No matter what other people do, carry yourself with grace.

3. Be proud.

In their own way and own time, all the Disney Princesses were proud to be who they are.

Be proud of who you are; don’t try to be somebody else. Don’t ever be afraid to be yourself and take pride in your accomplishments. If you can’t think of anything right now to take pride in, there is no time for change like today. Stand up straight, walk with pride, and look into your mirror on the wall and remind yourself that you are the loveliest Princess of them all.

4. Be sweet and kind.

Belle is always kind, Aurora is kind and selfless, and Snow White cleans the dwarves home and is kind to all the forest animals. Ariel is kind to others no matter what their circumstances.

As a princess, you need to be sweet to other people, which can be hard for even the best of us on a trying day. You must appear innocent and sincere in your sweet disposition, however, so you don’t come across as being laughably fake.

To be sweet and kind, try to live your life without a trace of evilness. You, my pretty, are not evil whatsoever unless a spell has been cast on you. You, sweet princess, are working toward being kind and affectionate. Speaking of villans, if you run into an evil male villan, he will naturally fall madly in love with you because of all your grace and charm, so be prepared to work your magic or run away to the castle over yonder…without him!

5. Be stubborn, to a point.

Belle is known for being stubborn. Mulan is very strong-willed and determined but always well-meaning and caring. Ariel was often quite stubborn and determined. Princess Jasmine is rich and powerful and often comes across as sharp-tongued and arrogant, but she is also fiercely independent with plenty of self-confidence and willpower.

When Cinderella grows tired of being bossed around, she says, “Well there’s one thing; they can’t order me to stop dreaming, and perhaps someday, the dreams that I wish will come true.”

Don’t let people step all over you like a doormat. People will treat you the way you allow yourself to be treated, so decide what you want, and be stubborn until you receive or achieve this. Dream your dreams, and use a bit of stubborn perseverance to get what you want. This may take hard work as well, but all the Princesses had to put some work into some sort of project to reach their dreams.

6. Be positive.

Cinderella has a positively cheerful and sunny attitude no matter what the circumstances. She is extremely patient, endlessly kind, and believes that through hard work and perseverance, all her dreams can come true. Snow White is unfailingly optimistic and never judgemental. Ariel she is depicted as being willing to do anything to be with Prince Eric, even giving up her voice to become human, and she remains positive even with this drastic end in sight.

You are what you think. If you can see a positive light at the end of your rainy day, you can achieve your dreams. Is your glass half empty or half full? If you want to be more successful, tell yourself you can do it. If you want to be sweeter and kinder, more graceful, then tell yourself you are! And soon you will be…

7. Be independent and brave.

Although Mulan is a clumsy character, she makes up for it with courage and spunk. While she is very independent and self-reliant, she is also very brave and even heroic.  Jasmine’s impetuousness and curiosity often lead her on exotic adventures, but because she is independent, she goes!  Pocahontas is free-spirited and independent. Princess Tiana is independent and self-motivated. She is a disciplined, hard-working individual who is not afraid to do things herself.

Independence…are you making your own decisions? Have you turned control of your life over to those around you, to drugs or alcohol, to other addictions? Are you making the type of independent decisions that will lead to the type of future you want for yourself?

Brave…when is the last time you took a risk and did something brave? I’m not talking about the bravery involved in riding the Hollywood Tower of Terror. Changing occupations, changing relationships, changing your eating plans, trying to stop a bad habit – all these things take bravery and can lead you to a more independent life. Change is hard; go out on your own and take a chance.

8 Be Smart.

Pocahontas was known as very wise, noble, and brave. Ariel has a great passion for discovery and adventure. We don’t seem to know where the princesses got their education, but words like dumb and uneducated are not words used to describe our Disney Princesses.

Educate yourself. In a day and age of instant information, knowledge is literally at your fingertips. Educate yourself in areas you feel you could learn more about. Think about signing up for a class on the internet. Haven’t started or finished that college degree you always wanted? Now is the time; don’t put it off. Read a book. Reading leads to a greater vocabulary, increased knowledge, as well as providing stress relief, and we could all use a bit of that.

Knowledge is power.

9. Have fun!

Ariel has a very sophisticated and refined air about her, but she is energetic, fun-loving, and outgoing, qualities that all make her fun to be around. Princess Tiana is very funny, friendly, and down-to-earth. Picture Snow White dancing around with the dwarves having fun!

Do we have enough fun in our lives when we aren’t riding Space Mountain? Ever stop to take a few minutes and watch America’s Funniest Videos with your kids? Ever stop to play a video game with your teens? When is the last time you threw a football in the yard with your husband or threw a frisbee to your dog? Holy Mickey Mouse, life is too short to go through every day without some laughter and fun!

10. Have the capacity to love!

This is the one area the Disney Princesses seem to have caught the most grief from feminist writers through the years. Some of our Disney Princesses have been saved by men, relied upon men, and given up precious things all for the love of a man. Cinderella was able to escape her horrible living conditions all thanks to the love of a rich prince who barely knew her. Ariel left her family, changed her body, and was willing to give up her most prized possession for a man she hardly knew. These sound like drastic steps for mere mortals like the rest of us regular women!

But the Princesses show us through themselves that we have a  strong desire to be loved. When these ladies find love, we sigh a collective, “Ahhhh” because all seems right with the world.

Should you leave your family, change your appearance, and give up your most cherished possessions all for a prince? Heavens no. Yet I think the world needs more love, and I think we could all open our hearts and find a little more room for love. Once bitten, twice shy, they will say. If love has hurt you badly in the past, just think of those Disney princesses, think positive, be sweet and wear a big smile, and maybe a little Disney magic could head your way.

And after all, what could a little more love hurt?!

I located a site called that has a great little poem about the princesses and love.

Cinderella walked on broken glass.

Aurora let a whole lifetime pass.

Belle fell in love with a hideous beast.

Jasmine married a common thief.

Ariel walked on land for love and life.

Snow White barely escaped the knife.

Rapunzel had to find a new dream.

Tiana kissed her prince and turned green.

Mulan left to be a man.

Pocahontas stayed to save her land.

It’s all about the smiles and tears,

because love means facing your biggest fears.

These are modern times we live in, and ever-changing world, and the photo reminded me that women’s roles in society have changed through the years. My ball gown doesn’t have to look like yours. We don’t have to sit and wait for our prince to arrive. We can go out and find him, but we don’t have to do that either to be happy. We are strong and competent, and we princesses can make our own destiny, with Mr. Charming or on our own.
