Cheapskate Princess Extravagance: Disney-Themed Arribas Jewelry

Mickey Mouse Disney World jewelry

The price of Disney-themed Dooney & Bourke purses just kill me. I have a really tough time rationalizing the purchase of a $300 purse with the price of vacations climbing higher and higher. One company that has always made reasonably priced souvenirs of the Disney Princess caliber is Arribas, also known as Arribas Brothers.

Arribas Brothers Company Inc was founded in 1967. The company’s line of business includes the retail sale of combined lines of gifts and novelty merchandise, souvenirs, greeting cards, holiday decorations, and miscellaneous small art goods. You can find their jewelry in Crystal Arts at Magic Kingdom’s Main Street and in their store at Disney Springs. Even though the company has a website of their own, you can purchase their fantastic jewelry designs at the Disney Store.com.

Disney PANDORA Charm Bracelets Don’t have to Cost a Fortune!

Cinderella Pumpkin Coach Disney Charm

Updated for 2016!

My PANDORA charm bracelet does indeed have several Disney-themed charms, and the only bad part about that was the cost. Many of the really stunning Disney-themed charms are almost $100. They are really cute too…

$90 – Mickey and Minnie Mouse ”Mickey & Minnie” Charm

$85 – Mickey Mouse ”Believe” Charm

$100 – Cinderella Pumpkin Coach Charm

When you look at the bracelets in resort gift shops, as well as in your mall PANDORA store, the sample bracelets are usually just filled with charms. I look at these and start doing the mental math – $55 + $90+ $55+ $80 and on and on..

Disney Pandora charm bracelet ideas

Pandora bracelet Walt Disney World

Pandora Disney World

When you look at these bracelets with many, many charms, one thing that seems obvious to me, given my penchant to look for a cheaper alternative, is to realize that you do not have to purchase all Disney-themed charms to achieve that Disney look.

PANDORA currently offers almost 25 charms that are $25 each, a far distance below the $100 Disney charms and half of what the other lower-priced Disney charms cost on average, which is about $55.

These are some of the really cute $25 charms.

Did you notice these two heart charms on the bracelet above?

The plain heart charm costs $25, while the Disney heart charm costs $55. In reality, you could purchase two plain heart charms for the price of one Disney heart “dream” charm.  If you are buying a starter bracelet for a younger child and don’t want to risk a $700 bracelet turning up lost or stolen, then make sure some of the charms you purchase are of the less expensive variety.

If you are like me, prone to losing or dropping things, you might want to go slow on amassing too many of the $100 charms, in case, ya know…

You can always make the pricey Disney charms a special present or gift to justify the higher expense.

Pandora

While I am a huge eBay shopper, I do caution people about purchasing PANDORA charms on eBay. I bought two charms once for $40 including shipping, while these charms normally retail for $50 each. The seller assured me they were authentic.

I took them for inspection to the nearest PANDORA retailer, where we all agreed they were very similar to the in-store charms yet slightly different. The salesgirl took close up photos and sent them to corporate, who confirmed they were fraudulent and asked for the eBay seller’s name.

So buyer beware…there are fakes out there.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Vacationing at Disney World? Then You’ll Need a Nap!

you need this at Disney World

Updated for 2018!

Do you realize how big those Disney theme parks really are? Can you imagine the toll all that walking will have upon your body? As I hit my late 40s, slipping and sliding toward the big FIVE-OH, I’ve come to one huge conclusion. I don’t care how much fun I am having riding roller coasters and seeing character shows, I need a nap to get through the Disney World day, and my friend, so do you. [Read more…]

The Best of the BEST Orlando Shopping: A Cheapskate Princess Guide

Best of the Best Shopping at Walt Disney World

Updated for 2018!

While many people associate Disney World with roller coaster rides, I immediately think of shopping. After all, window shopping is THE Olympic sport of the Cheapskate Princess. So if you are planning a trip to Orlando and have wisely built-in some time away from the parks, for a free day or days, where are the best spots to do some shopping?

We’ve put together a Best of the Best Shopping Guide for those of you with a Disney Visa Card burning a hole through your pocket, with addresses and phone numbers for your convenience.

1. Disney Springs

1490 E Buena Vista Dr, Orlando, FL 32830

Open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

This is the ultimate in Disney retail shopping. World-class restaurants, entertainment and unique Disney-themed shops line the lakefront right next door to Saratoga Springs Resort and across the street from water park Typhoon Lagoon.

You can shop in the world’s largest Disney store, enjoy a meal with life-size prehistoric creatures at TRex, bowl a game at the 30-lane bowling alley Splittsville and so much more. Parking and admission to Disney Springs area are free.

ProsSo much Disney merchandise in one place, and when you throw in food and street entertainment, it’s almost Mickey shopping overload.

Pros Disney Springs is still becoming an incredible shopping, dining and entertainment hotspot, and with the names of upcoming stores being announced all the time, this place will be amazing upon completion.

ConsThere is an incredible amount of remodeling going on right now. Traffic is a nightmare, and while two above ground parking lots are complete, it still  can be nerve wracking and time consuming getting to a parking place, especially the later in the day you arrive. This won’t last forever, but it will be an inconvenience at a minimum for possibly another year to come. Good luck on parking, but it’s worth the effort.

ConsThis is retail Disney shopping, and you may spot a couple bargains, but you would find better deals on Disneystore.com. But then again, that’s not as much fun as shopping while you are actually in Orlando.

Tip It is suggested you give yourself an hour to get there because of traffic and road work, especially if you have dining reservations.

Better Tip Our best tip is to go first thing in the morning, when traffic is more manageable, and follow this plan: Characters in Flight at Disney Springs: A Cheapskate Guide

2. Main Street, U.S.A., in the Magic Kingdom

It’s not often you will shop in early 20th century small-town America.  You can get a haircut at a real barber shop, plus shop for  souvenirs including plush toys, shirts, trading pins, and Mickey-ear hats at The Emporium. If you are hungry, Tony’s Town Square and the Plaza Restaurant offer table service meals, while Casey’s Corner, at the end of Main Street, sells hot dogs and fries. Your Main Street shopping experience has ended when you run into the iconic Cinderella Castle. Jewelry, snacks, ice cream, and souvenirs…all calling your name.

Pros- My goodness, what an amazing place to shop for Disney merchandise. You can almost envision Walt himself walking down the street as a child, except this main street is reportedly far nicer than the one of his childhood town.

ConsThese stores are crazy busy during certain parts of the day.

Tip – Unless there is a special party at the Magic Kingdom that night, these main street stores close an hour after the actual park does. While the whole world runs for the exit, this can be a great time for you to shop.

3. Disney’s Character Warehouse

Not as fancy as a traditional mall Disney Store, but pretty close, you will find all sorts of brand new merchandise at mostly deep-discounted prices. With t-shirts for as low as $10.00, Vinylmations for $2,50, and scarves for $8, you can find some true bargains at the Character Warehouse on a good day.

Pros This is definite discount Disney shopping, with prices up to 70% lower than normal WDW retail.

Pros One of the Disney’s Character Warehouses is located in the The Premier Outlet Mall, which is a discount shopping mall. You will find better deals here than other retail malls. Our family has found all sorts of discounts at the Premier Outlet, and we live in an Alabama tourist city with a 120 store outlet mall. We have found many sales to be better in Orlando for the same brand names we shop at home.

You definitely want to make some time to look through shops other than this one Disney store.

ConsIf you like it, you better buy it, because chances are over 90% (based on our previous experience) that your desired item will be gone the next day or within days.

ConsParking is a complete zoo at the Premier Outlets on Vineland, and the mall seems to be busy all the time, based on our years of shopping here and comments from locals.

Tip You can use your Disney MagicBand to charge items to your room. There are not many places I can think of off Disney property where swiping a Magicband will get you anything other than confused looks.

There are two Character Warehouse locations in Orlando, but our suggestion is the Vineland Ave. location.

4. Mall of Millenia

4200 Conroy Road OrlandoFL 32839

407.363.3555

The Mall at Millenia is a beautifully designed, 1.2 million-square-foot center, offering 150 of the world’s finest stores, services and eateries. You won’t believe the stores here:

  • Louis Vuitton
  • Gucci
  • Prada
  • Chanel
  • Cartier
  • Apple
  • Michael Kors
  • kate spade new york
  • Victoria’s Secret
  • Banana Republic
  • Brooks Brothers
  • Anthropologie,
  • lululemon athletica
  • Pottery Barn
  • MAC Cosmetics.

Department stores include Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s.

The Mall at Millenia also offers outstanding dining options like:

  • The Capital Grill
  • P.F. Chang’s China Bistro
  • The Cheesecake Factory
  • Brio Tuscan Grille
  • California Pizza Kitchen

Pros- It’s just a stunning mall with many, many upper line shops that you don’t normally see in most hometown malls, like my favorites Rolex, Brighton, and Pandora. Can you say window shopping at it’s best?!

Pros- The food court is open and airy with a multitude of seating and food options.

Cons It’s retail shopping, so you will pay the full price for the most part. And when you look at those brand names, you know I do mean full price.

TipBe sure to visit the Ikea store right next door while you are here. If you drove all this way from your hotel, you might as well pop in for lunch, like $.50 hotdogs and $1 cinnamon buns. Oh, and the two stories worth of discount home furnishings are a definite plus, if you have room in your car to take anything home. (We never do, which kills me…)

5. The Grand Floridian Resort

4401 Floridian Way, Lake Buena Vista, OrlandoFL 32830

Victorian elegance meets modern sophistication at this spectacular resort on the Seven Seas Lagoon. Relax in the lobby as the live orchestra plays ragtime, jazz and popular Disney tunes.  This Victorian-style hotel is quite reminiscent of Palm Beach’s golden era.

Pros This isn’t a mall, but you will be shopping at one of the most beautiful of all the Disney resorts with a band or a pianist playing elegant music in the background from late afternoon until evening.

Pros There are five different stores in the Grand Floridian, and although they are not huge, you will have lots to see.

ProsDuring the holidays, there is a two-story Victorian-styled gingerbread house in the lobby, plus a Christmas tress so large you won’t believe it. Also, Mickey and Minnie are here during holiday season, posing for photos for free.

Cons This is retail shopping, and I’m not sure they even keep SALE stickers rolls under the counter at the resorts. Many price tags are actually turned over so you have to ask the prices; I’m specifically referencing the jewelry cases here.

TipYou have really GOT to buy a bar of $5 soap at Basin White, which is a true bargain.

Another Tip – It’s just one stop to Magic Kingdom on the complimentary Resort Monorail or a quick boat ride.

6. The Contemporary Resort

4600 North World Drive. Lake Buena Vista, Florida 32830-8413

An ultra-modern resort hotel with award-winning dining, you are just a quick walk to Magic Kingdom park. You can catch a monorail to the Polynesian Resort, Grand Floridian Resort, and Magic Kingdom.  The iconic 90-foot-tall mural by Disney legend Mary Blair (think small world ride) celebrates the Grand Canyon and the American Southwest.

ProsThere are gift shops in all the Disney Resorts, some larger and more impressive than others. Two of the Contemporary gift shops don’t even have an actual roof, so you can see and hear everything going on in the resort around you. When the monorails travel through, you actually feel the floor shake a bit. Top that, outlet mall!

Pros Go grab a bite to eat in the Contempo Cafe. The prices are Disney-resonable, meaning you will certainly pay more than lunch at Burger King, but it’s not character meal high prices, and the food is really tasty. Snack prices here are under $5.

ProsThere are three stores to choose from at the Contemporary, ranging from $3 snacks to $400 Dooney & Bourke handbags.

ConsYou will pay retail price here about 90% of the time.

TipThere is often a pin trading board located in Fantasia gift shop.

Another Tip Choirs, Disney characters, and a large gingerbread tree are here during the Christmas holidays.

Theme park rides empty right into gift shops, and resort lobbies attach to more gift shops. You can’t take 20 steps in most any direction on Disney property without literally almost tripping into a gift shop. So prepare yourself. Merchandise is expensive, and it’s almost all calling your name, from key chains to coffee mugs that you never thought you wanted…until you saw it and suddenly needed it.

Anything you buy will have to make it home in your luggage, unless you mail it back, so this advice can help:

My biggest Disney vacation regret? I really should have walked more before we traveled. I am certainly not a couch potato, as I try really hard to walk three miles almost every day. Disney World Must Eat: the Giant Turkey Leg

turkey leg Walt Disney World

Updated for 2018!

Oh, Disney giant turkey leg, thou art so…huge! Have you ever seen anyone eat a turkey leg at Disney World? There’s not really a cool way to do it; you just dig in and hope for minimal mess on your Splash Mountain t-shirt. Ever wondered where these snacks, or meals depending on who you talk to, came from, and how much they will cost you to buy one? Should you buy one or just skip it for something less carnivore-ish?

We have all your juicy, meaty answers, plus advice from our Cheapskate Princess Facebook Fans on what to do with your ca$h – spend it on this iconic treat or save it for a Dole Whip.

Today.com’s travel section relates that the giant turkey legs were first introduced at Disney World during the 1990s, which according to a The New York Times article, started as single stand in the late 1980s next to Big Al’s Coonskin Caps in Frontierland. The legs became such a popular item, they were quickly introduced to the other parks. More than 1.6 million turkey legs are consumed at the resort every year, and you can even buy all sorts of parks merchandise with pictures of turkey legs on them.

Disney World giant Turkey Leg

Where can you buy them?

They are sold at both Disney World and Disneyland.

How much does it weigh?

Cured with a salt solution, the legs weigh 1.5 pounds each.

JeffCheapskate Princess Facebook fan, said, “I’m not a calorie counter, but I heard the calorie count on those along with the break down of fats and sodium per leg. And it is amazing how much of each can be packed in. I don’t remember all the numbers, but the calories were over 2000, and all the others were more than double a normal daily allowance. I’ve never had one, but after hearing all that… I never will!”

Good point, Jeff.

Exactly how many calories will you be devouring?

Each leg is roughly 720 calories with 36 grams of fat, according to a supplier, Yoakum Packing, as quoted by the The New York Times.

The turkey leg is so popular, there’s a shirt in its honor.

Do the legs really come from turkeys or some other animal?

The New York Times reports that while people are accustomed to Thanksgiving turkeys (female birds or hens) the Disney legs are from the males, called toms, which are bigger. They can weigh up to 50 pounds each.

Steffi, Cheapskate Princess Facebook fan said,”No thanks. I’m a vegetarian. Don’t you wonder how the legs get SO big ???

Excellent question, Steffi.

Are they chock full of Steroids?

The New York Times quoted Keith M. Williams, a vice president at the National Turkey Federation (industry trade group) as saying farmers give toms “plenty of room to exercise their legs.” Federal law prohibits the use of steroids to make turkeys any meatier.

And if eating animals isn’t your thing, they have a rice crispy treat version with exactly zero meat.

How many are sold each year?

The New York Times reported that at Disney’s six Florida and California theme parks, the company served up an astounding two million of its jumbo turkey legs in 2013. That’s 25 percent more than three years ago, and if you have noticed the turkey leg showing up in different park locations, like Tomorrowland at Florida’s Magic Kingdom, that number is sure to be on the rise.

The cost?

The legs each costs $11.75 (2017 price) before tax at Disney World. That’s not going to bust up your vacation budget, especially if you share it between a friend.

Angela, “We like them! With a side of fries. But two will feed a family of five (3 kids) and just add fries. Just make sure the birds don’t take them!”

Brittany, “Mmmmm! I let my inner fat kid out when we’re at Disney, so I might say snack!!!”

Laurie, “Snack. Hubby, son, and I share one. It’s tradition.”

Angela, “Meal, and usually the only one of the day. After that maybe some snacks later.”

Shelley, “Meal…my grandson and I usually split one.”

No way, Jose the Tur-kay

Christie, “Skip. There are Dole Whips around the corner!”

Christine, “SKIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EW!!! Definitely skip!!!!! Caveman meal for sure! LOL!”

The following may be the most men we have ever had respond to a Facebook question, and ironically (you know that saying about how men love meat) they all said to skip it.

James, “At 1,136 calories per serving, not to mention 54 g fat, I will SKIP.”

Bill,  “Skip. It’s gross, loaded with salt, and tastes more like ham.”

Sean, “Skip. I always think of cavemen when I see people walking around munching on those things.”

The results among our Facebook crew that answered the question were about 40% said, “Yes, we gotta have it!” and 60% said “Ewww, skip it!”

“Bizarre Foods” host Andrew Zimmern, in a photo by Gene Duncan from wdw.news.com, chowed down on some turkey legs with Chef Goofy in 2009. This guy eats all kinds of strange foods, so if he gives it a thumbs up, you know you’re probably OK!

And a pin from the Disney World Pinterest site offers this this last bit of tasty advice…

Dooney & Bourke sure make some fabulous Disney-themed handbags, and when you walk the sidewalks of the Disney theme parks, they are on shoulders of young at heart princesses everywhere. Some of the cutest patterns created are the Disney “Sketch” handbags. If you are looking for an amazing vacation souvenir or an item for the top of your Santa Wish list, then the Sketch may be the handbag for you.

The Sketch collection comes in light and dark leather, and today we spend time with the lighter version!

While these styles are no longer for sale in 2018, you can get an idea regarding how much you’ll pay for Dooney and Bourke Handbags. And if you are heart broken you will be unable to make a purchase, I would definitely try eBay to see if someone has a gently used version for sale.

Funny Stuff Overheard in the Disney World Parks!

DSCN9462

You will find yourself listening to other people’s conversations when you vacation at Disney World. It’s not that you’re being nosy or intrusive. There are so many people waiting in lines or riding transportation in such close proximity to each other, it’s almost impossible not to overhear what other people say. I overheard this on a monorail, “Look, Lauren, that little girl has three Mickey balloons. Her parents must love her a whole lot!” Those price-checking parents that know Mickey balloons cost nearly $20 each would get the joke. Poor ballon-less Lauren didn’t seem so amused, but I sure grinned!

We asked our Cheapskate Princess Facebook fans to tell us something they overheard in the parks, and I picked out all the quotes that made me laugh. Vacations can be stressful, and I am not sure you can over-value a good laugh these days. So sit back and laugh along with us…

Disney World balloons

Samantha  My son was on the monorail sitting next to a woman.  He then got up, and we all overheard him saying, “She smells like farts!” Oh my God, the embarrassment. He was three, by the way.

Joe On Main Street I heard a friend muttering, “I’m at the happiest place on earth, but I am not happy.” This was due to him fighting with his wife before arriving at the park for the day. In response, I said “SHUTUP!”

Erika  I was chatting with some kids on the monorail, and a younger sibling shouted across the car, “Stop talking to that old lady!” I am just 33!

Kimmy  From a little boy exiting the Haunted Mansion, “Mommy, why were the heads disappearing from all those pictures?” Mom, “Because it’s showing all her friends in those pictures had died.” Reply from the boy, “Wait, but when Gramdpa died, you could still see HIS head in our pictures.”  Mom “That’s because he didn’t die here.” When I heard this, I was like WHAAAAT?!??”

funny things you hear at Walt Disney World

Jill  We rode the monorail through ALL the resorts with a three-year-old named Hailey. How do we know her name was Hailey? ‘Cause we heard, “Hailey STOP” “Hailey come back” “Hailey, the doors are going to close on you” “Hailey, please stop crying.”  We laughed and rolled our eyes, but three years later we now have a “Hailey” named Addison who is just as bad.

Clarinda From my own kid, “I just wanna go to bed.

Don Overheard on Splash Mountain, “Is that some kind of word: Brer?”

Sara  Overheard on the Swiss Family Robinson tree house, “Yeah, it was a real family who got in a plane crash and landed on a desert island!

Over 20 Disney World Tips for Parents With Younger Children

Moms and kids love Disney World

Alicia  In the Magic Kingdom, there was a child who was crying and throwing a fit. The father yelled at the child saying, “I spent thousands of dollars to bring you to the Happiest Place on Earth! NOW YOU’RE GONNA BE HAPPY!!!” We still laugh about that ’til this day.

Cheryl  We got off Tower of Terror, and there was a girl about eight crying hysterically. Both parents were on each side of her smiling with the camera doing a selfie. Mom said, “Say Tower of Terror” right before they took the picture. This was so funny!

Susie Overheard from my 4-year-old son on the monorail. It was the first time we stayed with the kids at the Contemporary Resort. He asked some people getting off at the Polynesian Resort if they were staying there. They responded that they were not; they were just having dinner there and were actually staying at Pop Century. He replied, “Next time you need to stay at a monorail hotel. It is sooooo worth the money!”

Jessica  Overheard a parent tell their small child, “It’s not about YOU” while at Magic Kingdom. My husband and I laughed and kept saying that the rest of our trip!

Dapper Dans at Disney World

And Our Funniest Quote for the month, an award given by me to whomever made me laugh the most, for June goes to Deann.

Deann  Overheard on the train during the taping of the Christmas Day parade, “Hey honey, I heard that Regis AND Philbin are here!”

Sometime you just gotta laugh!

A big thanks to all our Cheapskate Princess Facebook fans for posting their quotes. Stop by one day and see what we’re up to on Facebook. If you have a funny quote, leave it in the comments, and we’ll add it in to our July edition. Be sure to leave your name, and we’ll make you almost famous!
