Updated for 2017!

If you’ve been to Walt Disney World, you’ve undoubtedly seen Space Mountain. It remains one of the most popular rides in Disney World, despite the fact that it is not the fastest ride in the park. Rockets only reach a top speed of 28 miles per hour, while other favorites like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad can get up to 30 miles per hour and the Splash Mountain drop can reach 40. Opened on January 15th of 1975, Space Mountain is the oldest operating roller coaster in the state of Florida.

Most of you have seen it from the inside, but it’s a rare opportunity that allows you to see it with the lights on. You won’t see it lit up waiting in line, and if you’re on the ride, chances are you won’t have a camera handy with the car traveling that fast.

No, the only way you’ll catch a glimpse of Space Mountain with the lights on will be riding the Peoplemover.

And that’s just where we were when the lights went on…

The Space Mountain segment of the Peoplemover offers the only easily accessible view of Space Mountain when the dome’s interior work lights are on. Because the two attractions have separate operating systems, the Peoplemover doesn’t close during Space Mountain breakdowns, so guests riding the Peoplemover when the work lights are on can get a rare illuminated look at the layout for the Omega(B-Side) track.

There’s sure a lot to see at Disney World, but sometimes, some of the best things just need a little illumination!

Thanks for stopping by, and we’ll see you waiting in line for the Peoplemover, hoping for a Space Mountain breakdown…
