Updated for 2017!

If you ever cut a bar of soap in three pieces to make it last a few weeks longer, then you just might be a Cheapskate Princess! Some of my favorite “free items” to bring home from a Disney vacation are the free H2O soaps from the Disney Resorts. Ok, I paid for them with the cost of my room, but they feel free, and who doesn’t like free?

Just where is a Disney Princess to go when she wants to pay for soap with a Disney theme? While you are shopping in the amazing newly remodeled Disney Springs, make a stop at a store called Basin. They also have a location called Basin White at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

Basin at Disney Springs

Basin is a luxury bath and body products store. They carry a wide selection of chemical-free soaps, all designed to make you feel pampered. Basin offers exclusive product lines of fragrances and solid perfumes, spa waxes, moisturizers, and a whole lot more. Basin is not one of your regular Disney merchandising stores, although there is a huge soap-Mickey in the center of the store and Mickey themes soaps for sale.

Just being in the store itself reminds me of a the gift shop at a spa, that clean feeling that comes with bath and body items.

Basin products do not contain any parabens, a substance that mimics estrogen.  Products containing synthetic estrogen have been linked to increases in cancer, male infertility, and changes in children’s developing reproductive systems.  Basin products contain no alcohol to dry your skin, nor do they contain mineral oils, which can clog pores and slow the skin’s ability to rid itself of toxins.

And for the animal-loving Disney Diva, Basin products are never tested on any animals. Now that you are free of parabens, alcohol and mineral oils, you can relax and enjoy your shopping!

Compared to regular Wal-Mart soap, these soaps are more expensive, but I compare Basin soaps to a Disney experience.  Each soap is hand sliced at $5.99 per 100 grams.  And while the price of lots of Disney items and experiences (tickets, anyone?)  has gone up substantially in recent years, the cost of these soaps has remained a steady $5.99 since at least 2012.

I can bring home a bar of soap with a distinct “Disney smell, ” and by that I mean, smelling this soap reminds me of being at Disney. I climb out of every bath or shower smelling of Disney memories, like a Disney deja vu!

Hot Fudge Sundae, Birthday Cake, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Ocean Mist, Pirate and Princess Soaps, Iced Cherries, Tahitian Vanilla, Waffle Cones, Tropical Sunset, and the list goes on and on.

What is my very favorite bar? You have got to smell the Lemongrass and Cranberry Seeds bar. It sells itself.

Every time I visit Basin, I start on one end of the soap display and smell my way to the other. Literally – I’m not kidding – I smell the soaps one by one up and down every isle. The soaps are visually appealing to any age group, with the most pleasant and relaxing scents.

When I finish sniffing, I always wash my hands with some of the salt and sugar scrubs. Even my husband and teenage kids enjoy “the Basin washing of the hands.”

Here’s a Cheapskate Princess trick…

Before you use the bar the very first time, cut it in half or thirds. I personally prefer thirds. Basin soap bars are typically 5 inches by 2.5 inches, and you don’t really need that much soap to get wet at one time. I like to think I extend the life of the bar by cutting down the size.

Want to check out Basin on your own? Go to basin.com, because occasionally the soaps go on sale.

You really need to drop by Basin in person to smell the wonderfulness for yourself. Another Cheapskate Princess tip…head to the front counter and see if any smaller pieces are bundled for sale. This gives you the 1/3 bar sizes I was talking about, in a variety of scents and colors, at a pretty good reduced rate. I pick up a small bag every trip, because I know I am bringing home Disney at a bargain Basin price.

It’s a good idea to pick up your soap AT Disney World, because when you try to make a purchase on sites like eBay, you’ll pay more. A LOT more.  With these auctions, it was triple the normal price.

So buying a bar of Basin soap is like picking up a Disney memory for $5.99, and that’s a pretty tremendous price for Disney World souvenirs. With the money you save, you might decide to take the family for dessert or a nice table service meal. And speaking of meals…
