We are not a family of fishermen. I’ve grown up on lower Alabama lakes and rivers, Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, and I can count on one hand the number of times I have held a fishing pole in my hands. Fisherwoman I am not; vacation gal, I certainly am. Our family has stayed at Caribe the Resort in Orange Beach, Alabama, numerous times, and never once did I think about fishing.

But my sons and my husband took some poles on a short October Caribe trip in 2016, and this turned out to be fantastic entertainment for the teens.

Throughout the day, you see all sorts of people fishing on the pier at Caribe.

Alabama gulf seafood is served up in restaurants and markets all year ’round, but what can you catch on your own? Use this chart from eatalabamaseafood.com to see which fish are biting each month.

Being no fisherman, I have no idea if anyone is catching any fish at sunset. If the poles are out or put away when the sun starts to go down, it would be a real shame to miss the amazing skies over the water.

And after the sun goes down, it’s time to hit the pools!

Remember that state law requires an Alabama fishing license to fish in any public waters of the state, fresh or salt, resident or non-resident. A license is not required when fishing aboard a licensed charter boat.

Alabama fishing and hunting licenses are now available for purchase online (2% fee applies) or by calling toll-free 888-848-6887 ($3.95 convenience fee applies). A temporary license number will be given for use until the hard copy arrives by mail. License Year Notice: All recreational licenses are valid September 1st – August 31st. All licenses purchased will expire on August 31st unless otherwise noted.

Thanks for stopping by, and we’ll see you on the docks at sunset…
