Beaches and Cream Soda Shop, what is Disney's Kitchen Sink, the best Disney dessert, Disney ice cream

Updated for 2018!

When they write a guide for a vacation dessert, you know it has to be a big deal. Ever heard of Disney’s “The Famous” Kitchen Sink? It’s one of the most unusual dessert experiences found in all of Walt Disney World, and it feed upwards of four people. Rumor has it this is probably the largest dessert you will ever lay eyes on, and that’s really not a big exaggeration. I’ve poured some big bowls of cereal before, but this thing is crazy!

Welcome to our Cheapskate Princess Guide to The Kitchen Sink!

Where can you find this dessert?

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is a small but quaint little lunch and snack shop found right behind the Stormalong Bay pool at the Beach Club Resort. On our first visit, I was expecting a larger facility, and I was not expecting to put my name on a wait list to get in. Now in all fairness, we do have a party of five. We didn’t wait more than ten minutes during an off-season time of year, but we were promptly seated at the counter rather than a table, which made ice cream sharing and family conversation a little tough. However, it made for a good show as they prepared food right there by the counter, and the smells were yummy.

The Kitchen Sink is a dessert so large, they literally drop it in a metal mini-kitchen sink, and then they throw in everything but the real kitchen sink.

Think you might want to take a swim while you are there? Think again. Stormalong Bay is one of those pools where they always ask for resort ID, so you won’t be swimming unless you are a paying resort guest. The sand-bottom pool does provide a nice back drop on your walk to the soda shop.

Speaking of pools and swimming, here’s information you need to know about Disney pools and pool hopping without getting in hot water.

How much does Disney's Kitchen Sink Dessert cost?

How much does it cost?

$32.00 in 2018. Ouch!

Remember this dessert is made to feed four or more people, so that reduces your cost per person considerably. Now I realize there are people out there that can prove me wrong, but your average one or two people cannot finish this creation comfortably without help. I might recommend you bring five or six friends.

What do you get for that much money?

The Disney Parks Blog lists the ingredients for the legendary Kitchen Sink dessert at Beaches & Cream. Here’s what you get:

  • ½ cup fudge topping, warmed
  • ½ cup butterscotch topping, warmed
  • ½ cup peanut butter topping, warmed
  • 1 medium banana, sliced in 1/2 –inch slices
  • 1 cinnamon spice cupcake (2 ½ x 1 ¼-inch), quartered
  • 1 angel food cupcake (3 x 1 ½-inch), quartered

Why do people call this an “event”?

Beaches and Cream makes a huge deal out of serving this dessert. They dim the main lights, flash some other lights, and announce the arrival of your Kitchen Sink for the entire restaurant to witness as they walk it with great fanfare to your table. Talk about word of mouth advertising – people audibly gasped as the Cast Member approached us with our sink full of icy cold sin! It’s not unlike the Elvis of desserts entering the building. They drop it off in front of you, and this is when you realize that you are way in over your sugar lovin’ head.

The menu says it feeds four. My husband, probably the only one wise enough to realize ice cream for lunch wasn’t the smartest idea, ordered a hamburger and only ate a little bit of ice cream. My teenage daughter had a small bowl and was finished rather quickly. My sons and I positioned the bowl between the three of us and took our best shot.

Back in the day, they offered coffee flavored ice cream. We are not coffee fans, so we scooped out the coffee ice cream instantly before it contaminated the other flavors. That won’t be an issue for you anymore.

As one would assume, ice cream melts fast. We felt like we did pretty good. We ate most of it, but we didn’t eat any of one of the five flavors of ice cream, so that’s really cheating.

I realize $32.00 is not for the faint of wallet. I pride myself on cutting Disney cupcakes in half (or fourths!) to save money, a cupcake that only costs $4.99, so the price of this dessert was more than I spent on Disney snacks in a week. Well, that’s an exaggeration, but enjoying The Kitchen Sink truly is a dessert event. It’s like climbing Mount Everest or hiking down the Grand Canyon; if you survive, you can say you did it.

If they sold an “I survived The Kitchen Sink” t-shirt, I would have purchased it.

Beaches and Cream, Beach Club Resort,

We finished it, for the most part. Would we eat it again? Yes, probably, but that’s still up for debate.

You think you are ready to take on this dessert legend? Here are a couple of tips.

1. I was glad I asked for the can of whipped cream not to be sprayed over the dessert. I’m all for sweets, but this would have killed us. We took a little ribbing from the Cast Members for this, by the way, as the kitchen staff was making jokes about our “whipped cream on the side.” Yup, I am a wimp; I can live with myself. You might not need the WHOLE can of whipped cream, if you plan to finish anyway.

2. This is not a really large restaurant, and while that does lend itself to a special sort of charm, it’s not like I could take the sink outside to find a larger table. My sons still talk about how they cook the burgers right in front of you. They cooked it in front of us because the only seats available were at the counter. My husband just laughed at us while he ate his burger, because we were too far away to chat. I probably would not arrive right at lunch time. Get to Beaches & Cream when other people aren’t traditionally there for a meal, like maybe 2 p.m. or 8 p.m.

You can also make reservations, which I would highly recommend.

3. How many people does it take to finish the whole thing? That depends. Our visit wound up with really three of us trying to do some damage, and there’s really no way we stood a fighting chance. Three of our main eaters all felt a little ice cream queasy for hours afterward. That’s probably what happens when you fill your stomach with ice cream at lunch time. If you have a large group of five or more, I say go for it and grab a spoon. This also cuts your costs per person down. Bring your friend for a cheaper price and less stomach after-shock.

The Kitchen Sink is a true vacation event, and we survived to tell the tale.

The real cost

Beaches & Cream is a table service restaurant, so on top of tax, you will be responsible for tipping your waitress. Some dining plans are accepted at Beaches & Cream, and they do take Tables in Wonderland cards.  They do not give DVC discounts.

It’s an expensive snack, that’s for sure, but everything seems a bit pricey at Disney. With my husband’s hamburger and Coke, three waters, and The Kitchen Sink, we walked out with a bill over $45. In 2018, that would translate into about $60 because costs have risen.  But I say over and over, this is an event, one you’ll be talking about for a long time to come.

And from our experience and reports from other Cheapskate Princess fans, Beaches & Cream can fill up fast during certain times of the day and especially on holidays. You could be in for a long wait during busy times of the year.

Beaches & Cream is open from 11 to 11 daily, and they advertise a “lunch” menu served during those hours. Lunch covers burgers and wraps to sandwiches and hot dogs.
