1st Trip to Disney? Why You Should Limit Electronic Devices

great-advice-for-a-disney-tripUpdated for 2017!

The last time we went to Disney World, my family brought along five cell phones, three Mac laptops, two iPods, and two iPads. Given all those devices, it would be rather hypocritical for me to give the following advice without admitting up front that we are a family deeply wired into technology. Planning a first trip to Disney World? The one thing you need less of on your Disney vacation are electronic devices. [Read more…]

Do Not Miss the Contemporary Resort Mural!

Mary Blair tiles, who was Mary Blair

Updated for 2018!

As a child of the 70s, I heard the name Mary Blair on every Disney vacation in every Disney monorail that zipped through the Contemporary Resort. My own children are not so familiar with her name. While I still can’t take my eyes off the fabulous seven story tile artwork in the atrium of the Contemporary, most children today seem lost in staring at their cellular devices. This seems like such a shame to me, as I touch the tiles every time I order something to nibble on at the Contempo Cafe. The tiles are a part of my Disney vacation history.

Just who was the creator of the fabulous Contemporary mural? [Read more…]

Don’t Get Sick on a Disney Vacation: A Cheapskate Princess Guide

Magic Kingdom, Disney World, Best Disney vacation ever, how to stay well on vacation, how not to get sick on vacation

Updated for 2017!

On a trip to Orlando just after Thanksgiving, I picked up a stomach bug of some sort that put me in the bed for the last 24 hours of our stay. My kids are I are big on “one last time at Disney,” because we never know when the next time will be. Completely gone was one was my last chance to ride the monorail over to the Grand Floridian to see the Christmas tree again. Gone was my chance to stand on Main Street after the park closed just that last one last time. Gone was my opportunity to put my arms around my children and gaze at Cinderella Castle for just a few minutes longer. Gone, gone, (cue vomiting sounds) and then I had to ride eight hours home feeling miserable.

Plus the other four members of my family got it when we returned home.

If you get sick while on vacation, you could be in big trouble. I really lucked out, because while I felt terrible, at least I didn’t have to go to the walk-in clinic, or heaven forbid, the hospital. There are serious horror stories out there of happy people who arrived in Orlando and illness derailed most of their entire trip. Time is money on vacation, and if you get sick, well, it can waste both. [Read more…]

What’s the most important thing you can do for your next Disney vacation?

I realize the answers will vary for this question. Save money? Make your Advances Dining Reservations 180 days in advance? Plan your three FastPass+ rides in advance? Pick a hotel room that doesn’t wreck your budget? All those planning details are indeed important, but I’m declaring that what’s most important is far more basic than any of that, and it’s actually a four letter word. Ready? [Read more…]

FREE Disney World Movies Under the Stars: A Cheapskate Princess Guide

Updated for 2017!

If you have young children, chances are, there is a TV on in your house right now playing a Disney movie. So why on earth would you want to go on vacation and watch yet another Disney movie? The first time I saw a blow up screen outside Bay Lake Tower, I laughed at the idea of taking up my valuable time (equals money) with…a movie. But my children weren’t laughing at all. Little did I know my sons would soon be popping their own popcorn and grabbing a seat for a Disney flick right outside our Disney resort. [Read more…]

Impulse Buys: How Returning Kid’s Purchases Is Costing You Money at Disney World

Disney World best souvenirs for kids

Updated for 2017!

With my family right next to me, I spend a lot of time in Disney gift shops when we’re in Orlando on vacation. I’m as much at home and happy on the back bench in the Small World ride as I am in a gift shop at the Polynesian Resort. Through the years, I have realized that my vacation time spent shopping for and purchasing Disney items wasn’t nearly the waste of time that returning those purchases was. [Read more…]

why take kids to Disney world

Updated for 2017!

Your Disney vacation is going to cost you a ton of money, but can you really put a price on the memories you make there with your children? I tell every new mother the same thing, “Time goes by heart-breakingly fast, so you better take a lot of pictures.”  And I follow it up with this, “The only piece of advice I will offer you? Take that baby to Disney.” They most-often don’t, of course, usually choosing to wait until Jr. is headed for pre-school. “Babies don’t remember vacations. Those trips cost a fortune. I want to take Jr.  when he is old enough to remember everything.” [Read more…]

Walt Disney World Souvenir Tips: The Original Classic Souvenir

best souvenir at Disney World

Updated for 2017!

The one thing everyone is wearing these days at Walt Disney World? Mickey Mouse ears, in some form or fashion. If a trip to Walt Disney World is referred to as “a rite of passage for American children” in today’s society, then the Mickey Mouse Ears hat is definitely the badge of honor. Look all over any park, and it almost seems like the hat-less are in the minority. Ear hats are this year’s must have vacation item, and probably every other year as well, and it’s certain to be on your princess’  list. [Read more…]

A Disney Princess Wouldn’t Wear a Fanny Pack, but a Cheapskate Princess Might!

fanny pack at Disney, fanny pack, why carry a fanny pack, fanny packs are ugly, fanny packs are hideous

Updated for 2017!

The fanny pack. I’m really not a clothes snob, but those are two words I can’t even say with a straight face. The thought of fanny packs have struck fear into the heart of Disney fashionistas for years. Can you imagine Cinderella with a sparkly fanny pack to hold her car keys and lipstick?

Uh, no. [Read more…]
