Best Disney World Meals Under $20: Whispering Canyon Cafe Breakfast

Whispering Canyon Disney World

Updated for 2017!

Ask Disney World travelers what resort they long to stay in, and a great many will say Wilderness Lodge. This resort has one of the most beautiful lobbies I have ever seen in all my travels, especially at Christmas time with the massive tree and all the decorations. But if the Deluxe Resort price tag is holding you back, you can stop by for a fantastic table-service breakfast for under $20 a person.

Whispering Canyon Cafe surrounds you with log-cabin atmosphere, and serving you will be, in the company’s own words, “colorfully named Cast Members who have a reputation for sassing customers.” Whispering Canyon is a lively dining spot known for loud whoops and songs, and the food has a great reputation for being consistent and well worth the price. They offer Lincoln Logs, coloring pages, spirited singalongs and hobby-horse races to keep the kids entertained.

While you can also enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Whispering Canyon Cafe, we recommend breakfast because the prices are lower. So just what do you get for your money? Let’s take a look at the 2017 menu.

At times, Whispering Canyon Cafe can be pretty noisy, so this wouldn’t be my recommendation for a romantic meal. But it’s a great dining location for those with large, noisy families or small children who might raise a fuss. No one will notice your noise with everything going on around you.

Be sure to make your ADRs (Advanced Dining Reservation) as soon as you know you are traveling to Disney World, because time slots fill up way in advance. Advance reservations can be made up to 180 days prior to your visit. And guessing by the latest rumors, you will need that ADR to drive onto property without paying a parking fee.

In my opinion, Whispering Canyon Cafe offers the best breakfast our family has eaten on property.

How Can You Look Like a Disney Princess? Start With Their Make Up!

Beautifully Disney Princess cosmetics

Those Disney Princesses sure are pretty. If you ask a little girl to say one word about her favorite princess, chances are she will answer “She is pretty.” How do they do it, work so hard all day and still look amazing? I’m sure we cal all agree that it’s their choice of make up, naturally!  Come on, admit, it, make up is the first word that popped into your mind.

You want to be a beautiful Disney Princess? Then you’ll need to follow their beauty regimen and purchase some Beautifully Disney cosmetics. Did you know the Disney Company sells make up, not really for the under 12 crowd, but marketed toward adult women?

Can you afford it?

It’s not as expensive as you might think, some of it anyway.

what make up a Disney Princess wears

Beautifully Disney is a collection of cosmetics and beauty products exclusive to Disney Parks. How does Disney define timeless beauty, like the beauty of those princess? “Through collections of fairytale nostalgia, unlocking harmonious colors, with the goal to keep you romanced by the contrast of mysterious yet inviting colors.”

Beautifully Disney lip gloss

There are two cosmetics collections now, Wickedly Beautiful and Unlock the Spell.

Wickedly Beautiful will take you into a world of good versus evil, where soft and deep lacquer crèmes shimmer with glitter. Wickedly Beautiful not only adds an air of sophistication with its luxurious color palette but it allows you to define your own character by choosing to be a romantic princess or villainous vixen.

Unlock the Spell creates modern interpretations of Tiana, Belle and Rapunzel.

Let’s take a look at the prices…

Disney Villains and Princess inspired lip glosses are sheer, shimmering and highly wearable, which means they are not just for the ball.

Lip Gloss – $14.95

The eye shadow palettes contain four unique yet complementing colors. You can create a classic smoky eye by using the Disney Villains palette or a sweet, romantic look with the Disney Princess palette. And if you are feeling particularly creative, you can use a little from both palettes to create your own special look.

The colors complement each other and can be mixed, matched and layered for endless combinations.

The Beautifully Disney cosmetics collection is designed to bring out the brilliance of your inner most beauty, turn you into a princess in your own right if you will. This character-inspired cosmetics collection is the first of its kind for the Disney Parks,  developed to evoke spirit, beauty, and fantasy.

Where can you purchase Beautifully Disney products?

1. Contact Disney Parks Merchandise Guest Services at 1.877.560.6477 to order the beauty collection.

2. Visit the parks and resorts. You’ll find the collection at Trend-D at Downtown Disney, and you’ll find it in many of the resort gift shops. You can’t miss the large displays.

I think the eye shadow and lip gloss prices are on the financial level of high end cosmetics you would purchase in upper end stores. If they don’t fit into your budget, you can always start off with the nail polish, because at $8.95, that’s not a whole lot more than polish you can purchase at Target or Walgreens. And there’s a Disney Princess or Villain on this bottle…

1st Trip to Disney World? Should You Buy Souvenirs Before Your Vacation?

where to buy Disney World souvenirs in Orlando

Updated for 2017!

What two things keep me from saving money on a Disney vacation? Food and souvenirs. I can save money on accommodations, be it staying off property or waiting for a super sale, you know, the kind advertised on television right now where you can save up to 30% on select WDW resorts. I could save money on food if we could travel during the Free Disney Dining promotions, but we can’t ever seem to get away during the golden days of free food. I can also bring my own meals and snacks into the parks, and that saves a great deal of money, even if it’s not as fun as eating a counter service meal at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe. [Read more…]

How do you take a great American icon and bedazzle it? You add thousand of sparkley-twinkley lights, and bibbidy, bobbidy, BOO!! There you have Disney’s Cinderella Castle, and she’s all dressed up for the Christmas holidays.

Like fun Disney trivia? Here are some fun holiday facts from one of my favorite Disney sites, Disney by the Numb3rs.com. You can find all their numerical Disney trivia by using this Disney by the Numb3rs link. Let’s see what it takes to make the Castle pop.

200,000 LED lights adorn Cinderella Castle, as they have every year since they made their initial debut in 2007.

500 strobe lights are used to help create the sparkling lighting effect.

32,000 square feet of fish netting are used to help hang the LED lights on the Castle.

And it takes 15 miles of cable to hang all the lights in place.

Of course you don’t have to stay at Disney during those ten days to enjoy the sights of the seasons, as holiday decorations start appearing throughout the parks by the first weekend in November and stay into the early part of January. And you always have the option to stay off property in a less expensive hotel. But for you to enjoy the holiday decorations during “Christmas” staying on property at a Disney Resort, it’s going to cost you more money than other times of year. That’s what a Cheapskate Princess calls a Disney Splurge.

Thanks to our friends at Disney by the Numb3rs, and stop by their site for some fun Disney trivia. Tell ’em a Cheapskate Princess sent ya!

Fun Facts about Disney World Christmas Decorations

how tall is the Contemporary Resort big Christmas tree, Christmas Tree, Disney Christmas tree

Updated for 2017!

The cost of spending Christmas Holidays at Walt Disney World are, if not THE highest, among the highest rates you will pay to stay in Orlando all year-long. Even the off-property hotels charge more this time of year. School will be out, which means so many people will haul the family off to Disney that entire theme parks will close their gates as they reach capacity. So you pay more money for accommodations, stand in longer lines with tons of people, and stress yourself out during your time off from work just to get your Disney fix. Only a true Disney fan would understand this mentality.

Because Christmas at Walt Disney World is like no other place on earth.

Like fun Disney trivia and holiday pictures? We’ve got you covered. Here are some fun holiday facts about the Disney decorations supplied by one of my favorite Disney sites, Disney by the Numb3rs.com. You can find all their numerical Disney trivia by using this Disney by the Numb3rs link.

Christmas Trees

When you glance at your 6 foot tree, remember that 45 to 70 foot trees are used all over the Disney World property, the tallest of which is the 70-foot tree at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

A total of 1,500 Christmas trees decorate the WDW property, including theme parks, resorts, and Downtown Disney.

8.5 million lights are strung, with 98 percent of the lighting used being LED lights.

Five to six years is the life span of a Christmas tree at WDW.

6.5 hours are needed to set up one 65 foot christmas tree.

Decorations

300,000 yards of ribbon and bows are draped over the Christmas trees across property.

Nine hours of holiday installation is needed to do all the holiday decoration for  the interior and exterior of Main Street, and it will appear and disappear suddenly like Disney magic…

600 decorations made of popcorn are created by hand, decorated, and painted by Disney artists to be used on the different Christmas trees.

Storage

54,000 square feet of warehouse space is used for the holiday services facility, with one room in this warehouse set aside for storing all the ribbon.

25 full-time Cast Members work in the holiday services warehouse facility year round, and the number quadruples when they go to install the decorations. (Let me just say that THIS is the job I want to apply for – Disney holiday decorator!)

40 trailers are loaded when the holiday decoration are being installed, and these trailers will be returned more than 150 times before the decoration process is completed  for 24 resorts, four theme parks, Disney Springs and other locations.

Ten days are needed to remove all the holiday decorations at the end of the season.

Floral Decorations

200 holiday topiaries are used to decorate the Walt Disney World resort.

100,000 poinsettias are used to decorate all of WDW landscape. 8-foot towers of poinsettias, which resemble big red Christmas trees, have been a traditional favorite of guests for years.  It takes 170 poinsettias to create each big red Christmas tree, and it takes two Cast Members an entire day to assemble each of these poinsettia Christmas trees.

Speaking of poinsettias, 30 to 40 are used to make just one of the poinsettias balls you will see hanging all around WDW.

Walt Disney World Souvenir Tips: The Original Classic Souvenir

best souvenir at Disney World

Updated for 2017!

The one thing everyone is wearing these days at Walt Disney World? Mickey Mouse ears, in some form or fashion. If a trip to Walt Disney World is referred to as “a rite of passage for American children” in today’s society, then the Mickey Mouse Ears hat is definitely the badge of honor. Look all over any park, and it almost seems like the hat-less are in the minority. Ear hats are this year’s must have vacation item, and probably every other year as well, and it’s certain to be on your princess’  list. [Read more…]

A Disney Princess Wouldn’t Wear a Fanny Pack, but a Cheapskate Princess Might!

fanny pack at Disney, fanny pack, why carry a fanny pack, fanny packs are ugly, fanny packs are hideous

Updated for 2017!

The fanny pack. I’m really not a clothes snob, but those are two words I can’t even say with a straight face. The thought of fanny packs have struck fear into the heart of Disney fashionsitas for years. Can you imagine Cinderella with a sparkly fanny pack to hold her car keys and lipstick?

Uh, no.

For anyone hiding out under a Prada rock, a fanny pack is a small fabric pouch secured with a zipper and worn with a strap around the hips or waist. The name “fanny pack” was derived from the fact that these bags were traditionally worn facing the rear above the “fanny.” Our reader Amy stopped by to say, “It’s quite funny because ‘fanny’ means something else (a far more intimate part of the anatomy!) in British English, so the fact you wear them at the front is quite appropriate!

Yet despite this highly amusing name, most people do not really wear fanny packs on their actual rear because they are easier to pick pocket there and much harder to access from that angle.

why take a fanny pack to Disney World

This guy, with his fanny pack from bagtake.com, is pretty hot. I believe he could single handedly bring this into fashion…

When you head off to Disney for your vacation, do you use a traditional bag or backpack, or do you opt for the fanny pack?

Some of our readers told us about their choices.

We have the fanny pack fans:

Kelsey, “My dad has always rocked a fanny pack at amusement parks, but now he is good at hiding them! So good, I didn’t even know he had one on until 3/4 of our day at Six Flags! I did see some “fashionable’ ones I would totally rock. Once my son is older, I don’t think I’ll want to tote all that stuff around!

Megs, “I LOVE MY FANNY PACKS! Literally. They are THE best. I have a pleather leopard print one that I got from a thrift store for 50 cents, and it comes with me to Disney, to go on walks and runs with my dogs, and on Black Friday! I know it isnt typical for a 21 year old, and I definitely get some odd looks, but it is totally worth it. Work that fanny pack girl. You gosh dang work it!”

Cody,” I wear one as a belt. I have one from Disney Movie Rewards that is black with a silver Mickey on it.”

Cindy,”They may be ugly to look at, but they are very convenient and, personally, I love not have something hanging on my shoulder and having my hands free!

And our backpack fans:

Eryn, “I have a cross shoulder backpack that is our “theme park bag.” It’s kind of the best of both worlds. Not too big, not too small, a good strap, keeps my hands free, but can also be passed around between the adults (& teen) throughout the day. Don’t forget one fatal flaw of backpacks: You’re going to end up carrying everyone else’s stuff! ? Heavy is the bag that holds the water bottles. You can only jam so much stuff in a fanny pack.”

Lauren,A backpack worked great for us. We didn’t have any instances where we couldn’t bring it on a ride, though we don’t do roller coasters or anything high speed, so that may be why.”

Here are some reasons for both.

Reasons to use a fanny pack

1. They may not be as fashionable, but they are smaller than regular bags.

2. While many a shoulder has been pained by a backpack, fanny packs don’t create the same strain, the main reason being, they are restin’ on your fanny or thereabouts.

3. With your bag around your waist, you have you arms more free to push little Mickey in a stroller, get in and out of rides a bit easier, and hold onto monorail poles a bit tighter, etc.

4. On rides where bulky backpacks are not allowed, you and your fannypack will pass through with no problem. This can definitely help some of you Disney Moms as you grab for your kids with two free hands.

Reasons you should stick to a traditional backpack

1. I will stop short of calling them ugly. I will simply say that you will not see Rianna or Lady Gaga rocking a fanny pack on any red carpet.

I have yet to see a Dooney & Bourke fanny pack featured prominently in any Disney gift shop. I am waiting with curious fascination to see if they appear. The photo below offers an example of current styles, and you can make your own judgement of fashion worthy-ness. These fanny packs are available at tillys.com back in 2012 for $12.99 before shipping.

2. You cannot carry as many items in a fanny pack due to their smaller nature.

3. I mentioned in #1 that I would stop short of calling them ugly, so let’s just say they are not the height of Disney Princess fashion.

Why am I not carrying a fanny pack? Because Dooney & Bourke don’t currently have one available in a Mickey prints, and personally, I am holding out for style over substance.

As small as fanny packs are, this may be the only Disney Dooney I can actually ever afford. Check out prices …

Can a Cheapskate Princess Afford a Dooney & Bourke Disney Handbag?

Style over substance? Size and comfort over fashionista superstar status? What do you wear to Disney to haul your stuff in?  If you buy enough non-brand bags, you just might be able to afford some of this Disney jewelry…or maybe not!

Black and white Mickey Mouse doll, colored Mickey dolls, Mickey Mouse toys, Disney princess toys, toys kids like, what do kids buy at Disney

Updated for 2017!

Taking the family off on vacation to Disney World can be more difficult than just securing the financing. You haul everybody off to Orlando for fun, maybe a little relaxation, and some family bonding. But people don’t always cooperate with the best made plans, even if you made them months out from your travel date.  Have you ever watched kids at Disney?

Let’s lump them into four categories: excited, tired, tantruming, and sound asleep.  [Read more…]
