You’ll Love the New Princess “Key” Handbags by Dooney & Bourke

Disney has announced a new addition to their Dooney & Bourke collection, just in time for you to spiff up your summer wardrobe. Keys are a big deal in fashion and jewelry these days, and now they are featured on a Disney Dooney along with icons representing your favorite princess characters.

Spending hundreds of dollars on a handbag definitely isn’t a cheapskate move, but taken care of properly, these totes and wallets can last 10 years or more. Sometimes bringing home an expensive souvenir, which we call a Cheapskate Princess Extravagance, pays off financially through years of use and enjoyment.

Must Buy Souvenir? Disney Character-themed Beach Towels

Updated for 2017!

My son bought a beach towel years ago on a Disney vacation. I thought he was crazy, and two years after the purchase, he brought it to me, deciding he was too old to use it. Ah, the trials of pre-teen boys. But now I was the owner of a Disney towel, with a cute Mickey Mouse front and center.

I’ve been using it for at least three years now, off and on for special swimming occasions, and it’s still in great shape. The vidid colors have hardly faded, and the towel is still a quality item.

I wouldn’t describe this as a cheap item. Should you purchase a beach towel on your next Orlando vacation?  [Read more…]

Disney PANDORA Charm Bracelets Don’t have to Cost a Fortune!

Cinderella Pumpkin Coach Disney Charm

Updated for 2016!

My PANDORA charm bracelet does indeed have several Disney-themed charms, and the only bad part about that was the cost. Many of the really stunning Disney-themed charms are almost $100. They are really cute too…

$85 – Mickey Mouse ”Believe” Charm

$100 – Cinderella Pumpkin Coach Charm

When you look at the bracelets in resort gift shops, as well as in your mall PANDORA store, the sample bracelets are usually just filled with charms. I look at these and start doing the mental math – $55 + $90+ $55+ $80 and on and on..

When you look at these bracelets with many, many charms, one thing that seems obvious to me, given my penchant to look for a cheaper alternative, is to realize that you do not have to purchase all Disney-themed charms to achieve that Disney look.

PANDORA currently offers almost 25 charms that are $25 each, a far distance below the $100 Disney charms and half of what the other lower-priced Disney charms cost on average, which is about $55.

These are some of the really cute $25 charms.

Did you notice these two heart charms on the bracelet above?

The plain heart charm costs $25, while the Disney heart charm costs $55. In reality, you could purchase two plain heart charms for the price of one Disney heart “dream” charm.  If you are buying a starter bracelet for a younger child and don’t want to risk a $700 bracelet turning up lost or stolen, then make sure some of the charms you purchase are of the less expensive variety.

If you are like me, prone to losing or dropping things, you might want to go slow on amassing too many of the $100 charms, in case, ya know…

You can always make the pricey Disney charms a special present or gift to justify the higher expense.

Pandora

While I am a huge eBay shopper, I do caution people about purchasing PANDORA charms on eBay. I bought two charms once for $40 including shipping, while these charms normally retail for $50 each. The seller assured me they were authentic.

I took them for inspection to the nearest PANDORA retailer, where we all agreed they were very similar to the in-store charms yet slightly different. The salesgirl took close up photos and sent them to corporate, who confirmed they were fraudulent and asked for the eBay seller’s name.

So buyer beware…there are fakes out there.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Do It Yourself Minnie Mouse Manicure Instructions for a Cheapskate Disney Princess

Free manicure Instructions from Disney World

How many of you have scheduled a spa appointment during your Disney vacation? This is a huge dream of mine (once my kids are grown and out of the house, in those years before grandkids beg “Glam Ma” to take them to the Magic Kingdom) to spend the day at a Disney Spa. Ah, the pampering, the relaxation, the Disney MAGIC of a different type than theme parks and roller coasters. I just don’t see it happening anytime soon, so I am left to do my own Disney nails in my living room.

While all Disney princesses sure love their manicures, it’s the Cheapskate Princess that doesn’t want to spend a fortune getting one. Lucky for us, Senses Spa, now with two locations on the WDW property, created  instructions on how to do your own Minnie Mouse manicure right in your own home.

Of course what better place to have a Disney manicure than at Disney World.

Move Over Disney Dooney & Bourke: Make Way for the Harveys Disney Seatbeltbag

Disney Seatbeltbags

If you have been a Disney gift shop within the last year, you may have noticed a new type of upper level purse found very close to the Disney Dooney & Bourke handbags. In what for years used to be JUST the D&B handbag section, there are now other purses options. A company called “Harveys” was recently given the opportunity to create original artwork for their Harveys for Disney Couture Good vs. Evil Princess Collection. The artwork for each bag was hand-sketched, painted with watercolors and then digitized.

Once you see them, you’ll want one, but can you afford it? [Read more…]

1st Trip to Disney? Should You Give Kids Money for Souvenirs?

Money for Disney World

Updated for 2017!

It’s really hard to gauge how much money you’ll need to bring on a Disney World vacation for souvenirs. If I actually spent money on everything I personally want to buy, it would probably be in the thousands. I can’t afford that, and most of you can’t either, not if I want to continue to pay my mortgage each month. I walk into Disney gift shops, and suddenly, I find myself needing things I never want to purchase on a daily basis at home. Coffee mugs, t-shirts, key chains. The number of key chains I have purchased when not on a vacation in Orlando? Zero, and yet…there I stand in a gift shop, looking at key chains and coffee mugs, Mickey Chef hats and Eeyore throw pillows, pondering when I’ll use them at home, yet needing to buy them in Orlando. Dooney & Bourke’s Disney Haunted Mansion Handbag

Dooney & Bourke Haunted Mansion handbag

These handbag were released in 2013, and although they are not sold on property or on DisneyStore.com, you can always search eBay to see what is floating around.

With the handbag “outside” decorated like a house at Halloween in a spooky grey and black color palette, the interior of the bag is the polar opposite in a beautiful red. Featuring the famous Haunted Mansion wallpaper pattern, there is a great hang tag with the attraction logo.

Boys! How Much Will It Cost to Dress Them in Costumes at Walt Disney World?

Boys costumes at Walt Disney World

Can you name more than three Disney Princes? No, that was not a misprint; I really did mean Disney Princes, like a prince. Obviously I am not watching enough Disney movies, because I couldn’t name two.  According to the Disney Wiki, The Disney Princes are an official line-up of male protagonists and deuteragonists (except for Li Shang who is the tritagonist) (??) who are the love-interests of the Disney Princesses. These include The Prince, Prince Charming, Prince Phillip, Prince Eric, Prince Adam and Prince Naveen, who are each born of royal heritage.  Aladdin and Flynn Rider become royalty by marrying princesses. Li Shang and John Smith are not considered royalty but are both still considered a “prince” because their love interests, Mulan and Pocahontas, are official Disney Princesses.

The Magic Kingdom parks are alive with beautiful little princesses running everywhere, dressed to the hilt in Disney designed costumes. Will you spot any little Disney Princes running hither and yonder to grab a FASTPASS? It’s not very likely, unless they were hand made by a mom or grandma.

And if you want to be original, there is always the home-made route. Jessica Courrier sent us this photo of her little man, who only dresses up for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. “We had an awesome time when my son dressed as Peter Pan though! Hook came to the end of his line to “fight” with our Pan. At Peter Pan’s Flight, an awesome CM took our little guy to the front of “his” ride. He loved how everyone treated him as if he really was Peter Pan! One of our favorite nights at the Magic Kingdom.”
